What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are derived from the leaves, flowers, roots, barks, and peels of fruits of some plants and are distilled into oil using various methods like steam distillation, cold press, resin tapping, etc. These highly volatile concentrated hydrophobic liquids are called essential oils as they contain the essence of the plant’s fragrance.

How to use Essential Oils?

Essential oils have been used by alternative medicines for long and their healing properties are derived through three ways namely: Inhalation , Topical application & Ingestion

Inhaling essential oils molecules are believed to influence the nervous system and the limbic area of the brain, as well as hormones, brain chemicals, and metabolism. Due to this property, these are known as excellent stress relieving agents. At the molecular level, these oils contain beneficial compounds like antioxidants, terpenes, and esters that may help to boost wellness.

Essential oils sometimes are applied directly to the skin to treat pain in a specific body part – say to relieve backache, or to ease sore muscles, or to relieve sinus pain and some may be used topically for their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, such as for acne or fungal infections. Different oils have different therapeutic properties and can be used accordingly. Very few oils can be ingested but with caution and under the guidance of a certified essential oil therapist only.

Another very important use of essential oils is as a natural pesticide. They have been found to have a variety of deterring effects on pests. These non-toxic pesticides have been found as effective as synthetic pesticides. The only drawback is that owing to its volatile nature when used as insect repellent it is relatively short-lived so creams and polymer mixtures are used to elongate the vapor period.
